Atlantis on Skyline

Atlantis on Skyline (2012)
Beach House Series
22x12 Oil on masonite
by
Daniel Cormier
Working more fluidly now than when I began this Series, I've reduced the blending of tones and allowed more of the wet undercoat to come through giving this piece more vibrancy than with previous attempts. The scene is from a visit to the Bahamas on the northern coast of Nassau. SOLD

Prospect at Sunset

 Prospect at Sunset (2012)
Beach House Series
  13x9 Oil on board
by
Daniel Cormier
Another late evening in Prospect, NS. This is a rare breakaway piece in my beach-house series gambling with traditional plein-air landscape. Working only with the palette knife I try to develop rich points of color and capture a nostalgic feel for this familiar cove. SOLD

These rocks are on the coast of Nova Scotia where I live and go for miles. Working only with the palette knife, I'm trying to capture the feel of the ocean on a sunny day by using a bright yellow undertone. SOLD

Apple Tree

 Apple Tree (2009)
Palette Knife Series
28x26 Oil on Canvas
by
Daniel Cormier
I used a free flowing palette knife, working from black one tone at a time. The paint was applied wet on wet and very thick for an abstract feel.

Coffee Shop Sundays

Coffee Shop Sundays (2011)
Palette Knife Series

A popular hang out and favorite study spot was the focus of this piece in my palette knife series. Working playfully I allowed the paint to mix on the canvas giving an overall rough angular feel. I chose to build the canvas in 3 panels (connected triptic) with a custom frame to compliment the wall of glass windows on the south side of the actual cafe itself which makes this piece very unique.

Palette Knife Series

My mother following her passion while I follow mine. This is early in my palette knife series experimenting with flat brush work to draw the eye into the area of focus while using a free-flowing palette knife to build the rest of the image.

Hidden Pasture

Hidden Pasture
18x22 Oil on Canvas
by
Daniel Cormier
I was hunting birds in near Sussex NB in a little spot called Chamber's Settlement. I crawled through some thick spruces chasing down a partridge and stepped right out onto this hidden cow pasture. I painted this in oils using both knife and brushes. SOLD

Banana Study

Banana Study
8x10 Oil on Board

A simple fruit study I did when I was in school. I found this hidden with some of my discarded early work. One of my better renderings from my years studying painting.

Dining Room Deco (The Missing Glove) (2003)

Dining Room Deco (The Missing Glove) (2003)
24x38 Oil on Canvas
by
Daniel Cormier
For a while I was falling in love with the art deco styles of the 1930's and painted this to hang in the dining room. Many people called it "The lost Glove" or "The Missing Glove" because she is only wearing one and appears to be sad.

Some years ago my grandmother asked me to re-paint (copy) an old print of a painting that was badly deteriorating. This now hangs in her home in a prominent spot. I would love to find out who painted the original.

Itze in Profile

Itze in Profile
20 x 24 Oil on Canvas
by
Daniel Cormier
This is the first of my 2009 to 2011 palette knife series painted using only one flat knife. I wanted to capture the family dog's stature in side profile like a diagram in a textbook. It was remarkably difficult to get the dog to stay in one position or even capture a proper guide photo. I resorted to a combination of several photos to reference the desired pose.

Often times I experiment with different brush styles to achieve something new in my studies. I painted these apples with a method used by the impressionists to create flow by employing directional brush strokes all over the canvas.
